Welcome to the website of the Gloucester, Hereford and Worcester Branch of the Church of England Guild of Vergers.

Vergers are lay church workers, salaried or voluntary, who fulfil a range of duties in the care of churches, those who frequent them, and the worship of God which takes place therein. Their title derives from the rod or 'verge' they customarily bear when leading or marshalling church processions; though such ceremonial may not be of regular occurrence in some smaller churches and other less visible work of preparation and welcome is characteristically at the heart of the role.

The Guild of Vergers aim to promote for our members Christian fellowship, training, and mutual support in their duties. To this end the Guild holds several national gatherings each year, including a residential Training Conference regularly held in Malvern, and our branch organises its own local programme of events, church services and visits, usually including an annual Quiet Day and a Christmas Dinner.

We would always welcome hearing from more vergers (and others who might perform similar duties with different titles) within our area; and guests would be welcome at most of our activities.
